Twelve ways to meet your online course goals 

Now that we’re welcoming in the new year, there’s no better time to set fresh goals to reach towards in your online course business. 

Goal setting, though, isn’t enough. Only 8% of people reach their New Year Resolution each year, and those are the people who have good habits and are committed. 

And we want to help you reach their ranks.

1. Create concrete goals 

It’s impossible to reach a goal if you don’t know exactly what success is going to look like. If your goal sounds something like, “Make a lot of money in 2018,” what will satisfy your definition of “a lot?” 

Instead, come up with a concrete number to aim for. Whether it’s $2,000 or $200,000, write it down and keep that number in your head. 

Additionally, make sure you add a timeframe to your goal. There’s a big difference between making $200,000 in a year and making $200,000 in a decade. 

2. Create a plan 

It’s easy to say, “I want to make an extra $10,000 this year” or “I’d love to start eating healthier.” But if you don’t put any action behind your goals, you’re more likely to fail. 

When you’re setting your goals, consider formatting them like:  

  • In 2018 I’m going to ___________ by:  

That could look something like this:  

  • In 2018 I’m going to make $10,000 extra dollars online by: 
  • Finish creating my online course 
  • Launching to my list of 2,000 people 
  • Hosting 4 webinars to promote my online course   

3. Prioritize reaching your goal 

Ok, so this one probably seems pretty obvious. But if only 8% of people are reaching their goals, that leads me to believe that upwards of 90% of people aren’t prioritizing reaching their goals. 

Don’t set a goal because it’s something your feel like you should do, instead set goals that you can 100% commit yourself to. 

Take time out of every day to work towards reaching your goal, and you may just surprise yourself with how quickly you reach it. 

4. Go public with your goals 

It’s easier to reach your goals when you’ve got someone cheering you on, and on the contrary, it’s easier to abandon your goals if nobody knows you’ve set it. 

Whether you decide to tell your mom, your significant other, or blast your goals to the interwebs, having someone to keep you accountable will help motivate you to keep making progress.

5. Get an accountability partner 

If you want to take the last tip to the next level, find someone who is trying to reach a goal similar to yours and work together to motivate each other and hold one another accountable. 

You can find this person anywhere, really. From your community, on social media, or in private groups for online entrepreneurs. 

If you need an extra layer of motivation or want to gamify your goal setting with your partner, consider using an app like Stickk with your accountability partner. If you don’t meet your goal, the money you put up as a wager is donated to charity.

6. Put time saving processes into place 

Personally, my biggest barrier to reaching goals I’ve set has always been mismanagement of my time. When you have a million things on your plate, figuring out how to get it all done can be daunting and then nothing gets done. 

If you’re focusing on creating an online course to grow your online business, figure out what parts of your current business you can automate. 

For example, if you’re spending way too much time on social media, figure out what you can schedule ahead of time. You can use programs like Edgar or HootSuite to run your social channels on autopilot.   


7. Delegate what you don’t have time for 

At the end of the day, the most successful people have gotten to where they are by focusing on the things they’re great at and delegating what they’re not. 

Know your strengths when it comes to running your business. If it’s in your budget, hire out so you don’t have to spend time doing what you’re not great at. 

You can find VA’s in Facebook groups (just search “VA” in the search bar and you’ll find a ton), or you can turn to websites like UpWork.  

By not getting bogged down by the parts of your business that aren’t where you excel, you can focus your energy on true growth and expansion. 

8. Celebrate the little wins 

If your goal is huge (and I hope it is!) it can feel discouraging when you’re only slowly chipping away at it. 

But in my eyes, all progress is good progress. Even if you’re only one tenth into reaching your $100,000 goal, think of everything you can do with that $10,000 you wouldn’t otherwise have if you hadn’t started working towards your goal. 

It can be exhausting running your online business - physically, emotionally, and otherwise. Don’t let little wins go by unnoticed. Celebrating mini-milestones along the way can help maintain motivation. 

9. Regroup when you’re facing hardships 

More often than not, you'll face a few hiccups on your road to success. 

It’s easy to give up at the first sign of failure, but oftentimes failures can help you realize what’s not working. 

So, if you held a pre-launch that completely flopped, instead of throwing in the towel, reevaluate. Go over your sales copy, your email marketing strategy, or even reach out to your email list. 

Figure out what went wrong and what changes you can make. 

10. Hold a mid-point assessment 

Halfway through the year, take a step back to really evaluate your progress. See if you’re on track to meet your end-goal, and if not there is no shame in making adjustments. 

The key here is to not completely give up or change your goal if you’re not on track. Instead, you can make smaller adjustments to your goal such as extending your deadline to give yourself just a bit of extra wiggle room.

11. Join a mastermind group 

Masterminds are groups of like minded people who are hyper-focused on reaching their goals. Typically, your mastermind will be made up of people who have reached similar levels of success in different niches so there is no direct competition. 

In mastermind groups, you’ll have regular calls or meetings where you can discuss your progress and each meeting a different person is in the “hot seat” and gets to talk about their highs and lows. 

Mastermind groups tend to take a lot of time and there’s a high level of commitment some even have five figure price tags to join. 

12. Join a challenge
