August 2017 Update: Launching Single-Page Checkout and iOS App 2.0

Laurence Bradford

| Aug 29, 2017

Despite summer vacations and nice weather in NYC happening in August, the team at Teachable has been crushing it.

A few highlights from the month include:

1) We officially launched single-page checkout.

Revamping the student experience during checkout has been a massive undertaking. Keep scrolling to the next section to learn more :)

2) We welcomed FIVE new employees to the team.

  • Melissa Guller as Head of Special Projects
  • Madeline LeClair as Full Stack Developer
  • Aquilah Jourdain as Customer Educator
  • Elle Hoffman as Customer Educator
  • Katie Scott as Account Manager

3) Our amazing Customer Care team is on fire with ticket response times.

At the beginning of this year, Customer Care was a three-person team responsible for tickets from hundreds of instructors, which meant that the average time to first response was hovering around 8 hours. Today? It's just below 40 minutes (during business hours, of course), and the team is 20+ and growing! Read our CEO’s (Ankur Nagpal) shoutout to them in the Tribe.

We Introduced 2 New Product Features

Single-Page Checkout

This project has been a huge focus of ours in the past couple of months, so we've been super excited to unveil our new single-page checkout design. We just started transitioning schools this morning, so if you haven't yet, go check it out on your school today!

With the new single-page design, when students check out now they'll immediately be taken to a page where they can enter the email address to use for their account, choose their payment method and add information, and review their order:

If their email address is already associated with an account (either on your school or on myTeachable if you've enabled it), they'll be prompted to log in right there on the checkout page, without navigating away:

Current account holders will also have the option to use their saved credit card if applicable:

Finally, if the student is creating a brand-new account rather than logging in, they'll finish creating their account after they have completed checkout:

You, our awesome Teachable instructors, were directly responsible for inspiring this checkout update. We heard your feedback that you were losing customers between the signup and payment steps of our old two-page checkout, so we set out to fix that. We hope in the coming weeks and months your cart abandonment rates plummet as your students enjoy a smoother, more streamlined checkout experience :)

Version 2.0 of the Teachable iOS App

We’ve had the iOS app out for some time in beta, but now version 2 is officially out. The app is designed for students taking courses on myTeachable-enabled schools to access material on the go. (Note that it's not intended for instructors to be able to create/manage courses on mobile--the app is for those taking the courses.)

From the app, students can stream course content on the go, take quizzes, and track their progress. One cool brand-new feature in this version: offline course access! Your students can now literally learn anywhere, wifi or not.

Having your courses on the iOS app is completely free--all you need is myTeachable enabled on your school. You don't even have to do anything; your students will automatically have access after downloading the app.

Here’s What’s Happening Around Teachable HQ

Teachable Company Blog

Originally, we had plans to start a Teachable tech blog, with posts from the engineering, data, and product teams. However, we decided that instead of restricting our company blog to posts from the tech team, we're opening it up to everyone in the company! We want to use this blog to show you the inner workings of Teachable. The blog is empty right now, but you'll see the first post from our CEO, Ankur Nagpal, in the next week. Keep an eye out, and make sure you follow us on Medium!

Visit From a Film Crew

In August we had a film crew come to the office to film a video about working at Teachable! They should be finished putting it together within the next month; we'll make sure to give you a heads-up when it's live. If you're interested in one of the open positions (see the bottom of this post), the video will give you a sense of what life's like in the office :)

Other Fun In-Office Events and Outings

August at Teachable came with two special events: Take Your Kid to Work Day and a picnic out at Chelsea Piers.

The kids had a great time writing product code and answering support tickets! ....Okay, in reality they mostly ate chicken fingers and posed for photos, like this one --

At the picnic, we got to enjoy fresh air and a great view of the river.
