We here at Teachable hope you’re having a wonderful holiday season with your loved ones. So much has happened over this past year. (Heck, even in the past six months since I first joined the team in July.)
To give you an idea of how just much we accomplished: last year, in 2015, Teachable instructors sold about $5 million in courses. In 2016, that number skyrocketed to $30 million. That’s a 6x increase! And as we continue to grow and you continue to share your skills and expand your schools, we’re expecting great things for next year too. We can’t wait to see what our instructors do in 2017 and how we can best help you get there.
A few highlights from the month of December include,
1) New employees joined the Customer Care team
Kadian Watson, Customer Care Specialist, started this month (woo woo). We also have a brand new member coming onto the Customer Care team in early January as our Community Manager. (So you’ll be seeing her often if you are active in the Facebook group!)
2) Started planning and goal-setting for 2017
We began sketching out our budget and objectives for next year, as well as, more specifically, next quarter, which is coming up quickly. Looking at what we did over the last year, we’re considering what went well and what we can improve upon in 2017. Also, we’re always thinking about new ways we can grow the company, improve experiences for our users, and best help you succeed!
3) Christmas Part-ays
We actually had TWO parties in December. One for all Teachable friends and customers, where we had a blast meeting many of you. And then we threw one just for the team. Here’s a picture from our team party:
4) So much travel and going home for the holidays
It’s awesome that we work on a team that comes from around the country (and world) or is traveling places this holiday season. Here are some of the places the Teachable team are right now (or were recently).
- Mike Poage (Software Engineer) in Redlands, California.
- Jackson Riso (Growth Marketing Manager) in Miami, Florida.
- Kyle Shigekuni (Customer Acquisition Specialist) in Orange County, California.
- Artashes Filoyan (Quality Assurance Engineer) in Killington, Vermont.
- Me, Laurence Bradford (Product Educator) in Havana, Cuba.
- Jess Catorc (Partnerships Manager) in Smithers, BC, Canada.
- Sid Yadav (Product Design Lead) in various cities around India.
- Cameron Mattis (Head of Sales) in France and Belgium.
- Eduardo Yi (Lead Content Marketer) in various cities throughout Venezuela.
- Ankur Nagpal (CEO) in Muscat, Oman.
Alright... Let’s get into the company and product stuff!
myTeachable now available for school users
In December we did a slow release of myTeachable for school users -- meaning students, authors, and affiliates.
With myTeachable, you’ll be able to accept instant logins from new users who already have myTeachable accounts, rather than requiring them to create a new account usable on your school only. To enable it, visit the Labs area inside your admin dashboard.
If you enable myTeachable logins on your school, users will be able to access your school, as well as any other myTeachable-enabled schools they belong to, from their centralized myTeachable dashboard.
To learn how to enable myTeachable on your school, visit Guide to myTeachable for Schools on the Knowledge Base.
Zapier Actions now available for professional plans and higher
With Zapier, several kinds of processes are available.
Those on the Basic plan and higher can set up Triggers within Teachable that set off Actions elsewhere.
Previously, setting up Actions within Teachable (which can be set off by Triggers elsewhere) was reserved for the Business and Enterprise plans, but it is now available for the Professional plan as well.
Learn more about the changes with Zapier here.
Updated Admin Interface
We got a facelift! Thanks so much to our product designer Sid, who gave our admin area a makeover. Here’s what it looked like before:
Our Finest Content From The Month

There are big projects and great interviews coming your way in January, so keep an eye out on the Teachable Blog.
Teachable Employee Spotlight
Meet Mike Poage
How long have you been working at Teachable?
I’ve been hanging around this place since August 2014, so a little under 2 and a half years at this point.
What do you do at Teachable?
Currently I work on the engineering team with a focus on building and maintaining our internal tools. I also help build and maintain various third-party integrations and features that school owners can use like Zapier or multi-language captioning.
What’s the best thing about your experience working at Teachable?
Honestly, having the chance to meet so many new people and learning about their interests and passions. There are plenty of people out there who teach, but it takes a special kind of person to teach online. And by being a part of the Teachable team I get to engage with and help those people achieve their goals every day.
What’s an interesting Teachable school that you’ve come across?
Lolita, A Rescued Dog - which raises funds for shelters.
What are you most excited about going forward?
I’m most excited to see how the industry develops over the next couple of years and the tools we create to meet the needs of our instructors and students.
What's Hapenning Next Month
iOS app is coming soon… and we’re looking for beta testers!
We're debuting our new iPhone app in the coming weeks and are looking for a few dedicated beta testers that want to offer it to their students before it's available to everyone. Note: there is no yet set date yet for availability in the app store, because it all depends on when it is accepted.
The app is completely free and allows students to access your courses from their iPhone.
Want to learn more about becoming a beta tester? See our CEO’s post about becoming a beta tester here, in the Teachable Tribe Facebook group.
Unveiling a Brand New Knowledge Base Site
We are SO excited to launch a revamped version of the Knowledge Base site. (It should be live in early January.) Our revamped site is a reflection of the new direction we’re heading in as far as the Teachable brand goes.
Here’s a sneak preview of the site:
Look out for the new support.teachable.com sometime in January.
Welcoming a new head of content Randle Browning
We are so excited to have Randle Browning, formerly Director of Content at Skillcrush, join the Teachable team later in January. Randle brings experience from the online education space, and is skilled at refining brand voice and producing quality content. At Teachable, Randle will be managing the blog as well content-driven programs we run. She also has her own blog - The Waco Vegan - where she shares vegan recipes as well as personal anecdotes. (Like her recent cross-country trip.)
Want to learn more about Randle?! Follow her on Instagram here.
Here are the openings we’re currently looking to fill:
We’re so excited to keep growing the Teachable team in the coming months. Perks include working in a gorgeous office in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, enjoying an exciting and fast-paced environment with awesome people, competitive pay, health care benefits, and more.
Have an amazing rest of 2016, and we’ll see you in 2017!
